XDS™
XDS™ (Cross-Domain SCORM) is a patent-pending
technology that makes it possible for learning objects
to physically reside outside the LMS, while providing
SCORM delivery inside any SCORM-conformant LMS.
This enables the following:
- Secure Content: Content is
only available via login to a Learning Management
System. Publishers can effectively deploy courses,
modules, or even individual media assets without
having to worry about unauthorized distribution.
- Content in Central Repository:
With XDS™, content is kept in a central
repository, while SCORM learner data is passed
to one, or many Learning Management Systems (LMSs),
in different locations. If you make content updates,
you make those updates in one location, and with
the XDS™ technology, those updates will
be instantly available on any LMS referencing
the XDS™ format content.
- SCORM Learner Data: LMSs today
are used such that SCORM content resides on the
same server as their LMS. With XDS™ format
content, SCORM information gets saved in the LMS,
even while the content physically resides on a
different location, server, and/or Web domain.
This eliminates the need to maintain multiple
copies of content on different servers.
- Enables “Mass Customization”,
Reuse: Because XDS™ format SCOs
are portable within an LMS, instructors can add,
move, and re-sequence content, customizing courses
to individual needs of the school, department,
even individual classes. Using XDS™ publishers
can enable this mass customization, while ensuring
that the source content (residing on a remote
severs) is not edited.
What are the results?
The first leap forward in the evolution of eLearning
was the separation of content from navigation engine.
That ushered in the era of templates & rapid
development. The next leap forward is the separation
of content from the management system while persisting
SCORM communication. This ushers in the era of "realtime"
content updates (content as fresh as an online news
site), and research-based improvements to usability,
test items, and instructional design. |
